Aaron is a Product Designer on our Growth Team. His work impacts our customers' bottom lines by enhancing product design to grow their businesses. Read more to find out about his day-to-day and what he loves about GlossGenius.
I’m a Product Designer on the Growth team, where I focus on designing ways to enhance our users’ success and business growth on the platform. This includes setting goals, better understanding their metrics, learning how to elevate their business, and overall helping users to feel more confident in using our platform.
Additionally, I lead our design system initiative, which involves designing, documenting, handing off, and communicating new components and standards for our product organization, particularly for our new desktop application.
GlossGenius is unique in its customer-centered and design-driven approach. Listening to and understanding users is a common practice at our company, and our Product roadmaps are highly influenced by the goal of improving the customer and user experience.
Our user base is highly creative and beauty-oriented, so they value a user experience that’s both beautiful and enjoyable. This has become a core product principle at GlossGenius, which is quite exciting.
Our customers care deeply about beauty, so I always ensure that any design created has an element of beauty in it, whether it’s in typography, curated imagery, or playful content design. For example, in a recent goal-setting project, I used a tone of voice and visual style that speaks the language of our users and aligns with our brand’s voice.
User research is also a key part of our design process. The beauty industry is extremely diverse, so usability testing, concept testing, and simply talking to users about the state of their business is a regular part of my design process.
Good project management and prioritization are key to moving fast with excellence. In a startup where there are endless tasks, it’s important to have a source of truth and clear priorities to ensure time is spent effectively. We achieve this at an organizational level with a product roadmap listing every potential project and its priority. I also use a separate Notion spreadsheet to manage my daily tasks. This ensures I’m delivering on projects and provides visibility into my progress for my team, manager, and other stakeholders.
I recently embarked on a design sprint with a few other designers to create a visual design North Star for our application, resulting in a UI that’s unique, functional, and beauty-centric. We’re currently refining this visual design language and planning the path forward for its implementation. It’s fulfilling and exciting to work on large-scale initiatives that significantly impact our overall visual language!
Designers at GlossGenius have incredible autonomy and ownership over a product domain. They significantly influence what, how, when, and why a product gets built – the sky is truly the limit. Since joining GlossGenius, I’ve grown as a designer in numerous ways, such as managing multiple large projects simultaneously, refining storytelling skills in design and leadership reviews, and tackling significant challenges like aligning the product organization on a design system and getting teams to use and build it. Simply put, there are vast opportunities here, and the areas for growth are endless.
GlossGenius is actively hiring across many departments – check out our open roles here.
