Portland is well known and loved for its rich concentration of hipsters and artistic types, making the City of Roses a perfectly hospitable environment in which bold hairstylists can thrive. Within this city made up of small, neighborhood salons there is no shortage of big GlossBoss energy, so we've rounded up some of our favorite Portland-based stylists who continue to wow us with their technical talent and whimsical hair artistry below.
Patrick Garcia, master of extensions and king of color, keeps Portland colorful with punchy hues and rainbow-shaded roots on his clients across the city. From a neon bob for his mother-in-law to the wavy manes of mermaid-esque extensions on his VIPS, Patrick has become so popular in Portland that he’s no longer accepting new clients.
Cindy Thongrivong, affectionately known as “Cindy Thongs,” is a diversified stylist who splits her time between San Diego and Portland, where she specializes in a variety of colors, cuts, extensions, and sunless spray airbrushing. Earning herself a reputation for slaying the Shadow Root technique, she has racked up a number of Behind the Chair OneShot recognitions, ranking in the top 25finalists in 2021. Her popularity continues to grow among Portland’s residents as well, with a waitlist of up to eight weeks for new clients.
Hristian, now known as Chris, moved to the U.S. from Bulgaria at 21 years old to conquer the fashion world. Finding his way as a professional cosmetologist and licensed esthetician, he specializes in vivids, blonding, and creative wig making. Prismatic hair painting and psychedelic-inspired styles take center stage on his IG feed, and clients love his “Mystery Color” sessions where a discounted fee gives him complete creative freedom to color however he wishes. With Lady Gaga as his muse, it’s apparent he lives by Portland’s mantra of keeping it weird in the best way possible, by embracing his love of experimenting through his own look and by helping people boldly express their true colors.
Onai Aziz is a talented young stylist who has made herself at home at Portland’s Honeymoon Salon where she specializes in transforming clients through quirky cuts or wispy styles. No stranger to a pair of shears (or a razor), she effortlessly cranks out cool-girl looks like razor-cut bobs and modern step mullets that feature organic shapes and flow with soft movement. As an added bonus, many of her before and afters are taken on film giving her feed a nostalgic aesthetic that adds to the allure of her approach to cutting.
